Cora Havill had a lot of speed. Boy never made a move on her. She is a shifty selling plater.
Joe Mancini ran a game and honest race. Aureola, off badly, could never get through. Dorsey’s
ride on Belchax would not do at all. Eagle Bird has lost his speed. Ida M was running easily at

LOGAN’S POPULAR VICTORY.

Alexander Shield’s iron horse Logan won a
popular victory at Ideal Park yesterday. He
was in the nine furlong condition event with a
feather on his back. Still Dorian was made
favorite over him. Mr. Shield’s youngest son
rode the old horse and getting away second
took him to the front passing the stand, and
after that nothing ever headed him. Logan
seemed to have all of his speed and fighting for
his head covered the first three-quarters in
l:14i4. This caused the heads of Sunburst et
al to buzz. All Logan had to do after was to
gallop the rest of the way. Old Logan was
roundly cheered.

“Tully” (/oulter’s well-bred and fast filly Cali-
fornia, real good just now, was heavily played
by her party to win the four and one-half fur-
long dash. California won, but it was only by
a neck and under pressure. She had luck, too.
Virgie Dixon was the best, but was away poorly
and had the worst kind of fortune. She was
coming strong in the stretch, but Holy Terror
and Philomena got in her way, and before Dorsey
could find an opening the race was run.

Montepenso and Easter Eve won their races
handily. So did Cora Havill, but her rider
drew the finish fine.

Jockey Caywood was out of form and rode
two bad races on Provident and Uncas.

Ham, who has been laid up with a broken col-
lar-bone, is getting along nicely, and will ride
this week. He will be a great addition to the
riding talent of the track.

Californian racing will not begin for some
days. The new Oakland track is not yet fin-
ished.

HAWTHORNE’S FINANCES.

Ed Corrigan was in town Wednesday on his
way to San Francisco via St. Louis. After the
cheap local stories about revolver talk by him
to his partners owing to financial difficulties
in the recent Chicago Racing Association meet-
ing Mr. Corrigan delivered the accounts to a
firm of local accountants for examination. Here
is the report :

Walton & Joplin,

Pub. Accts. & Auditors,

852 Rookery Buildino.

Chicago, III., Oct. 20, 1896.
Ed. Corrigan Esq., Chicago.

Dear Sir: — After a thorough examination of
the books of the Chicago Racing Association,
from the time they were originally opened in
Mav, 1891, until the present date, with an espec-
ial secretary of your own account, we hereby
certify that the books show a balance due to
you from the association of $4,537.65.

Walton & Joplin, Public Accountants.

It turns out through the expert report that
there are debts to the association by stock-
holders but not by Mr. Corrigan.

Time, 2 :23.

Winner— Ch. g. 6, by Longview — Visit.

Start good. Won easily ; next two very handily. Scamp weakened at and after the last jump.
Uncle Jim had plenty of speed at end. Herman tired last quarter. He has had too much of it
lately. It looked as if there was some waiting for Uncle Jim.
